The 29-year-old Ms Afrah Asathi Mahamooda, a chronic rheumatic patient with a curved spine was diagnosed with a defective heart valve only in 2004; during a steel rod implantation in her vertebral column. Since then, she and her husband have been running around the world in search of precise medical treatment for these life-threatening issues. Unfortunately, they were turned down several times and the only console they received was a suggestion for a total valve replacement. However, they were not given confidence for an open heart surgery because of her weak spine with a steel rod inside. During their desperate online research, they happened to learn about an Indian hospital named Metro International Cardiac Centre, with a good review of successful complex-heart surgeries at a moderate rate. It was then they contacted MICC and subsequently reached India (via Kenya), and underwent a thorough investigation under the expert guidance of Dr V. Nandakumar. They were advised for an open heart surgery that will help sustain her heart valves through a major correction, rather than going for a valve replacement surgery. This surgery has marked another breakthrough in the field of medical heart care. Dr Muhammed Mustafa, MD, Metromed International Cardiac centre responded that such life-saving heart surgeries are made possible only by the dedicated service and compassion of the whole medical team.
