KERALA’s FIRST AND SMALLEST NON-SURGICAL PACEMAKER IMPLANTATION DONE SUCCESSFULLY AT METRO!
Jul 17, 2018
MICC announces the non-surgical implantation of the World's smallest and newest leadless pacemaker to Kerala! Yesterday, this revolutionary step in pacemaker implantation was taken at Metro; which invariably is going to be a major turning point in the pacemaker management. Unlike most pacemakers that are placed in the patient's chest with leads running to the heart; MicraTM, which is 93% smaller, is implanted directly into the patient's heart. At MICC, this has been implanted with just a ‘puncture’ near the patient’s groin area. The outstanding features of this pacemaker procedure include: ~ just the size of a vitamin capsule ~ non-surgical implantation ~ no chest incision ~ no leads required ~ no scar ~ no anaesthesia ~ minimal medical complications ~ Patient can resume regular activities faster MicraTM is introduced to patients with abnormal or irregular heartbeats. It adjusts the heart rate automatically, by sensing changes in the patient's body related to the activity level and adjusting the heart rate accordingly. It is placed in the heart via a vein in the leg, thus no chest incision, scar or bump that results from conventional pacemakers. MicraTM is completely self-contained in the heart. It eliminates potential medical complications arising from a chest incision and from wires running from conventional pacemakers into the heart. The size comprises of a big vitamin capsule and hence it is convenient for the patient. MICC has been able to offer the best and the latest in medical heart care to the Kerala Diaspora. We have received excellent technical support from Medtronic Company USA, to perform this benchmark procedure. Approved by the FDA in April 2016, MicraTM has only been used by the fortunate few in the Indian Metro Cities. MICC is grateful to its Heart Team, to have initiated the smallest pacemaker implantation in Kerala; which happens to be another milestone after the break-through success of Heart Transplantation.
